Impact

Robotics will have a transformative impact on the way that we live. We’re working towards making this impact positive.

Transparency and openness

The impact of general robotics will in some ways be larger than that of software models. Transparency and openness are important for ensuring that advanced capabilities are developed safely. Although we don’t plan to open-source most of our models, we will publish frequent reports on the level of capabilities we have produced, and make our models available for use by other groups, as well as individuals who wish to experiment with the frontier.

Our hardware is open in part to allow for the comparison of capabilities across different models, including models not made by us. We believe this will make it easier for the technology to be integrated into society, and to make it clearer where capabilities stand.

We advocate for the early and deep diffusion of capabilities into the world as they improve. We believe this is the best way to improve societal readiness, and to catch things that go wrong early, ahead of the much more advanced capabilities that are around the corner.

A resilient world

Our society may be exposed to new types of physical risks that it has not yet adapted to, including bio and cyber-physical risks from AI, and climate change.

We believe general-purpose robotics is an important part of addressing these challenges. Robots could help us build factories for population-scale vaccine production, or large geo-engineering projects to help mitigate the effects of climate change, that would otherwise be too expensive or too slow for us to complete.

What would it look like for things to go well?

AI makes it easy to build software that is aligned with your needs. You describe what you want in natural language, and the agents build it. General robotics could produce a similar dynamism in the physical world, letting us change everything from the basic ways cities are organized, down to how easy it is to make a neighborhood garden. Municipalities will be able to maintain cleaner cities, with more trees and better roads. The price to build housing will drop.

Widespread robots will also allow us to dream bigger than would otherwise be possible. Imagine a global power grid, or nation-wide high speed rail. Abundant energy follows from cheaper energy installations and research toward new forms of energy, and entirely new medicine follows from automated labs.
